I love my home, my beautiful town, friends and family.  Then what is it that is so compelling about Africa?  Aside from the beauty, feeling useful, at it’s core it is relationship.  I have written about this before, but end up frustrated by my inability to express what I am feeling.   You have seen scenes on the news when a tornado has torn through a town, stripping it of its homes leaving stunned residents in its wake.  What do the people do, what do they say.  Many look for treasured photographs – neighbors cling to one another – people who have lived side by side and not really known one another before this tragedy.  At that moment their lives have been laid bare of all ego, the things we have come to identify ourselves with, our possessions, image, class.  For a while in this egoless state all we have left is relationship.  It is pure.
